Shoal heart stepping stone
among the muddy shallows
a trustworthy friend

  1. These are beautiful words. They remind me of Tennyson's famous line from a poem he wrote:
    "we rise on stepping stones of our dead selves to higher things." I am not sure why that came to mind. Here you are speaking of a stepping stone in the shape of a heart protecting you from the mud, something known and trusted. Somehow it made me think of a launching place to something new, a higher experience. Either way, I like it.

  2. Interesting how there can be so many interpretations, whether intended by the poet or otherwise.I was thinking of friends being our crutch and not minding the fact that they are our stepping stones.
