Truth/Connection
Nothing can be truer than the love connection I have with my Uncle Jimmy.
Jimmy is my Mom's older brother.
He is the oldest living relative from that line of Irish immigrants.
His smile is crooked from all those years of telling jokes. His laughing eyes speak more than his baritone whiskey voice.Such a fun mischievious rascal.
Old tools,a welding torch,a couple of old boats, a camp trailer and a riding lawn mower are among some of the litter in his yard. The township where he lives has told him to clean up his property it's an eyesore. Slowly he is working on it.
Last week at his wife's 90th birthday party...Yes they are both up and around...
I ask him how he was feeling. He answered "Well, I have to crawl into bed at night with a 90 year old woman."
He has had a long and beautiful life. Full of service and love. He has made so many people laugh with his practical jokes and cry with his tenderness.
I love him so.
This is my truth.
This is my connection.
Oh, how utterly precious..... and what a beautiful way to look at truth.

ReplyDeleteGem, he's soooooo beautiful!!! When I meet people like your Uncle I am so appreciative -- it reminds me that maybe there is a way, a model for aging with love and grace and laughter and tenderness instead of the model I had from my family of origin. Thank you so much for sharing your Uncle Jimmy with us!!!!

ReplyDeleteNow this is the best post on "truth." I wish that I could turn back time and spend more moments with my grandparents who immigrated to the U.S. They had so many more stories to share that I never heard.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treat! SWeet, sweet, sweet!
ReplyDeleteMy dad's older brother Ole (Olin Joseph) died a few years ago - just shy of his 103rd BD! Tho I didn't spend a lot of time with him, a favorite memory is a visit while he was in his mid 90s, a few years after my dad died. I was delivering the 'family book' my dad had, & during our talk, he slipped off the arm of the couch - picked himself up & grumbled a bit . . . just so full of vim & vigor!
precious gilmpse of a well lived life - thanks for sharing!
Gem
