Yesterday a giant swallowtail butterfly paid a visit to our house.
It must've been resting from a long flight, as it stayed motionless
for quite a while.
We were in photo mode.
The butterfly was an lucky added attraction...
This morning I found a poem that says it all:
To a Butterfly
I've watched you now a full half-hour,
Self-poised upon that flower;
And, Butterfly! indeed
I know not if you sleep or feed.
How motionless!---not frozen seas
More motionless! and then
What joy awaits you, when the breeze
Hath found you out among the trees,
And calls you forth again !
This plot of orchard-ground is ours;
My trees they are, my Sister's flowers;
Here rest your wing when they are weary;
Here lodge as in a sanctuary!
Come often to us, fear no wrong;
Sit near us on the bough!
We'll talk of sunshine and of song,
And summer days, when we were young;
Sweet childish days, that were as long
As twenty days are now.
William Wordsworth
this butterfly looks like a magnificent piano.
ReplyDeleteWhat a magnificent poem by Wordsworth and fits right in to the photo you took of that butterfly resting it's wings at your yard.
ReplyDeleteThe photo is so awesome and the poem..perfect!
ReplyDeleteSuch an artist you are, Gemma! The love of beauty and the desire to express it are always so wonderfully rendered through your words, your art, and your photos.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! xoxo
ReplyDeleteOne year when Dan and I were living in student housing at UND in Grand Forks, the city was visited by a huge influx of Painted Lady butterflies. (Sorta like monarchs and reminded us of the monarchs' visit to Pacific Grove). How magical it was to see all those butterflies in one place (and have it be Grand Forks, ND, of all places!). I will never forget this experience.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo and the poem seems to have been written just for that butterfly!
