Simple Abundance

My wildman has been out of work for a year.
Who knew it would be this long?
He has been chronically employed since he was 12.
Could this really happen to him?
Our hero, our breadwinner, he's a giving man.
What would we do without his income?
I thought making it on my salary alone
would be impossible.

Truth is we have lived a beautiful and abundant year.
At first we used the resources on hand paying off some bills.
We stopped the indiscriminate buying of unnecessary things.
We prepared and ate delicious meals.
Some of our veggies were homegrown.
We shopped the sales and used coupons.
Our month to month bills are paid.
We still have cable and internet.
I managed a couple of mini vacations.
Our home is almost paid off....

Most importantly,we stopped and looked.
We have a beautiful family.
The birds are still singing. The trees sway in the breeze.
My new purple rose bush bloomed.
Our grandchildren laughed or made me laugh every day.
The things that really matter are in place.

Much to be thankful for.
Life is good.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Gemma, that is beautiful, just like you!
I love the art work too!
Inspite of (or maybe because of)challenges, you have managed to tell us what really delights and sustains you!
    Happy Thansgiving!
P.S. We just learned that Mr. Pear will be home for another 3 months...so I'll keep working full time. Have resolved not to be lazy about making art..and will do it anyway! You inspire me!

  4. What gorgeous paper or painting, Gemma! I am with you; we do need to remember to be thankful for what we have each and every day. There are so many that haven't managed as well. Thank you for reminding us of perspective.

  6. It's been 7 months for us - and though we're still sometimes learning to live without fear about it, it has been far happier than we might ever have imagined. You're so right - the birds still sing, we still eat well, the grandchildren make us laugh - as you said so eloquently, "all of the things that really matter are in place." Life is good.
Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving weekend, Gemma~xo

  9. We are still climbing too, Gemma. It isn't easy, but we are thankful that we have each other and the little we have now seems like a huge bounty compared to those who have none. Thank you for this post. You are loved. xoxoxo

  12. Belated Thanksgiving wishes to your and your family, Gemma. Life is indeed good and, sometimes, it can take harder times to make us see that the simple life can be just as joyful and fun, if not more so. I recently bought a book called 'Living the Simple Life' as I intend to get a lot more serious about it.

    Have a wonderful weekend! xo
