part 1
Who is she?
Maybe it's Alma.
Maybe she needs you.
When my children were growing up they spent some time each week doing community service.My daughters volunteered at a nearby nursing home.
They visited people and took nail polish to paint some of the ladies fingernails.
While there they met many wonderful people.
One in particular was a 100 year old lady named Alma.
She sang to them and told stories about her life.
Most of her family had died but she had a long lost nephew who lived in Iowa. Alma really missed him. With a little investigating my girls were able to locate him. They called him and eventually he did come to Arizona to see Alma.
She was delighted. My girls cried with happiness that they were able to make a difference in someone's life.
My children tell me that volunteering made a positive impact on their lives.
My son also remembers feeling good about himself for helping out at a local food bank.
This week why don't you try it?
I'll do it too.
Go to a Convelescent home.
Ask an attendant if there's anyone who would enjoy a visit.
Maybe take some pretty polish or just a smile....
Ask them about their hands.
Chances are those hands have done alot.
Or volunteer your extra time somewhere.
Lots of folks need our help.

Edited to note: I start a position volunteering here next week.
that is a fantastic thing to do.. here where I live we have the Red Cross Ladies who do that. I joined a year or so ago and did it for awhile until family matters took over.. here you can't just go into a nursing home and do it, you must be trained and also have a police clearance done on yourself.. sad, sad, sad. I tried to do community visiting for awhile too, until the powers that be decided that you must do a course to be able to visit the elderly. I think the only way you can do it without 'training' is to become a special minister at church and can take communion.. what a sad world we live in...

ReplyDeleteI used to do craft projects in a nursing home, but it has been a long time! Thanks for the reminder!
What a wonderful story, and how fantastic that your kids did volunteer work. I love the idea of visiting older people in homes....there's one not too far from where I live.

ReplyDeleteThat's a really good idea Gemma. It's good to contribute something to the community. I still make a point of giving two hours of my time each week to our local writers' group - I know that some of the older members especially value the get together, as it's the only time they get out and meet people and do something creative.
